Tua Tagovailoa returned to Miami Gardens with his new team Atlanta Falcons after spending six years here. Every return is special, but Tagovailoa’s return certainly wasn’t taken well by the home fans.
After playing for Miami Dolphins for over half a decade, this was the first time he had played against the home team in Miami Gardens. As fans booed him loudly, he didn’t pretend to not notice it, rather opened up about it after the game.

Addressing reporters, he acknowledged hearing the crowd but reiterated his lasting appreciation for the city and the team.
“Well, of course I did,” Tagovailoa said. “But, you know, needless to say, like, being able to come back here, like, I’ve had six years here, and those are probably some of the best six years of my life, being able to, you know, play for Miami, being able to be in front of the crowd.”
He tried to point toward the positives of the occasion. “You know, I mean, [I] had a Pro Bowl here, like, had a good amount of accolades. So, regardless of the reaction, like, I mean, I love the city. We have a home out here. Like, we still have our house and whatnot. But, I mean, it is what it is. You know, I can’t change any of what they did and whatnot, but, you know, it was really cool to see a lot of the guys after the game, and then, you know, talk to some of the guys during the game. So it was a cool homecoming, if you will,” he added.
Ignoring the harsh reception, Tagovailoa focused on his performance on the field completing 7 of 8 passes for 95 yards in a 17-12 Falcons win while treating his return as a positive opportunity to reconnect with former teammates. The hostile reception also drew a reaction from his former teammate Tyreek Hill who came to his defense online.

With veteran Kirk Cousins departing during the 2026 free-agency period and third-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. recovering from a knee injury sustained late in the previous season, the Falcons needed immediate stability and high-level depth under new head coach Kevin Stefanski.
Rather than handing out starting roles, the Falcons front office framed Tagovailoa’s arrival as a true competition. Tagovailoa embraced the opportunity for a career reset, splitting first-team reps throughout training camp alongside a healthy Penix and veteran Cooper Rush.
