Tucker Kraft's Impact on Green Bay Packers Ahead of 2026 Season Opener

The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for the start of the 2026 NFL season, and all eyes are on the team’s offense, particularly in light of recent roster changes. With star running back Josh Jacobs currently on the commissioner exempt list, the Packers are looking for players to step up, and tight end Tucker Kraft is a key figure in that equation.

Kraft, who has not participated in a regular-season game since suffering an ACL tear last November, is expected to play a pivotal role in revitalizing the Packers' offense. His potential return was highlighted during a recent episode of The Athletic Football Show, where analysts Derrik Klassen and Robert Mays discussed Kraft's unique ability to change the dynamics of the game once he has the ball in his hands. Mays described Kraft as "just like a moving freight train," underscoring his explosive playing style.

Before his injury, Kraft had already established himself as a valuable asset for the Packers. In the 2025 season, he recorded 32 receptions for 489 yards and six touchdowns over just eight games, averaging an impressive 15.3 yards per catch. If he had maintained that pace throughout a full season, Kraft would have finished with 64 receptions, 978 yards, and 12 touchdowns, all of which would have set franchise records for a tight end.

The 2024 season had already showcased Kraft's talent, as he caught 50 passes for 707 yards and seven touchdowns across all 17 games. His ability to turn short completions into significant yardage makes him a crucial outlet for quarterback Jordan Love, especially as the Packers aim to improve their offensive consistency this season.

With Jacobs sidelined, the Packers are left to rely on a backfield that lacks his established workload. This situation amplifies the importance of Kraft's return, as he can help fill the void left by Jacobs’ absence. His capacity to create big plays from short passes could provide Love with the support he needs to navigate the field effectively.

However, there are lingering questions about Kraft's readiness for the season opener. Reports suggest that he might be limited in snaps early in the season due to his recovery from the ACL injury. Despite this, Kraft has expressed confidence in his ability to contribute, stating his goal is to start the season without any restrictions. He has also indicated that ongoing contract negotiations will not hinder his performance on the field.

The Packers have faced scrutiny this offseason regarding their offensive capabilities and Love's development as a quarterback. Kraft's return could be the missing piece that allows the team to elevate its performance and compete effectively in the NFC North. If he can regain his explosive playmaking ability, Kraft may very well become one of the key components of the Packers' success in the 2026 season.
