The Washington Commanders released 34 players over the weekend to come up with their initial 53-man roster for the 2026 season.
However, it was perhaps the moves Washington didn’t make that drew its fans’ ire. Sunday was busy across the NFL with every team trimming its rosters from 90 to 53 players. Several teams made trades, including three teams looking for interior offensive line depth. That’s particularly interesting, considering the Commanders’ need at center behind projected starter Nick Allegretti.
Washington doesn’t even know if Allegretti will be a quality center. He’s mostly played guard in his NFL career. He also missed almost all of training camp. Many fans were upset that GM Adam Peters didn’t address the position earlier in the offseason, and many were confused by Sunday’s inactivity.
Commanders fans were mostly concerned about the offensive line and cornerback after the initial roster was finalized Sunday night. How concerned? Let’s head over to X — formerly Twitter — to see some of the best reactions.
Here are 10 thoughts on the Commanders' initial 53-man roster:
1) It's obvious that Fabian Moreau is going to be back on the team as soon as Trey Amos hits IR. WSH only has three healthy CB's on the 53 until Moreau is brought back, but he's vested and doesn't need to clear…
I’m sure AP will be all over this. Neck injury, calf strain and a 49er… https://t.co/lZ1gNx37hB
— Tiller56 (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 30, 2026The Trey Amos situation has become insanely infuriating
— Billy Tinkle (@BillyTinkle) August 30, 2026Allllll these cheap trades man. AP better have a bigger plan. https://t.co/KhlKmWJqiy

— SleeperCommanders (@SleeperWSH) August 30, 2026If the Commanders are going to add at center (obviously we all agree they should) identify your guy and go get him, waiting for cuts to hold on to a late round pick is egregiously passive in my mind
— Mitchell Tischler (@Mitch_Tischler) August 30, 2026The Commanders keep certain players solely based on their draft status. Kain Medrano was terrible and Luke McCaffrey got outperformed by UDFAs two years in a row
— Wommanders (@Wommanders) August 31, 2026Commanders starting center competition is coming down to Hugh Jass and Mike Oxlong
— Full Command (@FullCommandShow) August 30, 20264 centers I believe were traded for today and Adam Peters was asleep all day. https://t.co/G8OnPv4E10
— Zac (@DCzWall) August 30, 2026Allegretti & Gublin are likely your centers folks. Commanders will probably look for a veteran guard. Center market is so bad at this stage.
