However, it was abruptly halted after just seven matches, leading to the Sri Lanka Lions being declared champions despite playing only two games. This unusual situation has raised questions about the legitimacy of the tournament.
On August 5, the league's official Instagram account announced a final match between the India Royals and Sri Lanka Lions. However, this was soon followed by a confusing post that included the same scorecard from their previous encounter, further casting doubt on the tournament's credibility. Notably, the league's official website lacks any scorecards or results, only displaying fixtures.
The tournament, held entirely at the Lotus Sports Club Ground in Lusaka, Zambia, faced significant issues when the Zambia Cricket Union (ZCU) publicly stated on August 4 that the league was "not sanctioned, approved or endorsed" by them. This declaration prompted a swift response from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which announced that disciplinary actions would be taken against individuals who participated in the unsanctioned event without proper approvals.
The PCB's statement outlined severe repercussions, including a two-year ban on receiving any No Objection Certificate (NOC) for participation in sanctioned overseas leagues. This ban would also render players ineligible for any cricket-related roles with the PCB and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for the same duration.
In light of these developments, former Indian player Sudeeptyagi, who was listed in the India Royals squad, took to Instagram to clarify his position. He stated that he was "not a part of this league" and emphasized that he had no association with it. This move appears to be a strategic distancing from the potential fallout of participating in an unsanctioned event.
The Legends League had attracted several high-profile players from India, including Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, and Yusuf Pathan. However, reports indicate that Rayudu withdrew shortly after arriving in Lusaka due to inadequate facilities and various technical issues. Dhawan, Raina, and Pathan ultimately did not participate in any matches.
Initially, Dhawan was appointed as captain of the India Royals, but the team saw Rishi Dhawan and Naman Ojha take on leadership roles during the tournament. The Pakistan Panthers were captained by Imran Nazir, while Shakib Al Hasan led the Bangladesh Tigers. The Asian Stars were under the captaincy of Tillakaratne Dilshan, with Thisara Perera at the helm for the Sri Lanka Lions.
