In an impressive display of offensive prowess, the UCF Knights triumphed over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats with a staggering score of 73-6 in their season opener held in Orlando. This victory not only signifies a strong start to the season but also sets a new program record for the largest margin of victory.
Making his debut for UCF, quarterback Alonza Barnett III showcased his skills by throwing for 158 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing a rushing touchdown. The Knights wasted no time in establishing dominance, scoring on their first three drives and achieving a remarkable 10 touchdowns out of 12 total drives throughout the game.
UCF's scoring onslaught began early when running back Duke Watson electrified the crowd with a 64-yard touchdown run on just the second play of the game. Defensive standout Jayden Williams then added to the excitement by returning an interception from Tyler Jefferson for a 47-yard touchdown. Barnett capped off a stellar first quarter with a 5-yard rushing touchdown, giving the Knights a commanding 21-0 lead.
This victory surpassed the previous record of a 64-point win against Grand Valley State in 1987, when UCF was still competing in Division II. Additionally, the 73 points scored by the Knights tied the program record previously set in 2017 during a game against Austin Peay, which occurred during coach Scott Frost's tenure.
Despite the lopsided score, Bethune-Cookman managed to find the end zone in the final moments of the game, with quarterback Joel Morris connecting with Kobe Stewart for an 8-yard touchdown pass.
The Knights showcased their depth, with nine different players reaching the end zone. Many starters were rested after the first drive of the second half, allowing UCF to rotate through four quarterbacks. Watson led the ground game with 110 yards on just seven carries, while Landen Chambers, a transfer from Central Arkansas, added 56 yards and two rushing touchdowns, including a notable 29-yard run. Agyeman Addae also contributed with a 39-yard touchdown run.
UCF's defense, which aimed to improve its turnover rate this season, managed to achieve two takeaways against the Wildcats. Williams' interception return for a touchdown marked the first such score for the Knights since November 7, 2025. The defense also forced a fumble, with Aymeric Koumba's strip sack leading to a recovery by Horace Lockett.
This victory marks UCF's 11th consecutive win in opening-night games, reinforcing their strong tradition of success in season openers. The Knights have now won 20 of their last 22 season openers, with an impressive streak of 11 straight wins on Thursday night openers.
