Kaufman-Renn suffered a knee injury in early November of that 2021-22 freshman season. After undergoing surgery, he opted for the redshirt season. Under the old model, an athlete who lost all or most of a season of eligibility – even one who also took a redshirt season – could seek a waiver to have that year of eligibility reinstated. The NCAA’s new rules closed that exception, so an athlete who loses one of their five seasons to eligibility has no waiver to pursue.
