As the University of New Mexico (UNM) prepares for an exciting football season, first-year Athletic Director Ryan Berryman is optimistic about the future of Lobo sports. With heightened expectations surrounding the football program, alongside men’s and women’s basketball, Berryman acknowledges the positive environment he has inherited.
"I couldn’t ask for anything more," Berryman stated, reflecting on the strong foundation laid by previous leadership and the talented coaching staff. The enthusiasm surrounding Lobo football is palpable, especially following a remarkable 2025 season, during which UNM led the nation’s FBS programs in average home attendance increase, boasting a staggering 57.8% rise compared to the previous year.
However, this surge in fan interest brings its own challenges. Berryman is keenly aware that the influx of supporters means addressing issues such as parking and stadium overcrowding. With the 2025 season showcasing tremendous crowds at University Stadium, the athletic department is implementing new strategies to enhance the game day experience from the very first kickoff.
"Our goal is to maximize our available parking spaces and improve the tailgating experience for fans," Berryman explained. He emphasized the importance of accommodating the growing number of supporters, remarking, "A shortage of parking spaces is a great problem to have as it means the Lobos are playing meaningful football and competing for a conference championship." This sentiment reflects the aspirations of the program as it seeks to build on its recent success.
As the season opener approaches, Berryman has outlined essential parking guidelines to ensure a smooth experience for fans attending games. For the upcoming Saturday kickoff, the Stadium East parking lots will open at 6 a.m., followed by additional lots opening throughout the morning and afternoon. The schedule includes various opening times for parking areas, including the T-Lot and CNM lots, which will open at 2 p.m., and the main stadium gates that will open at 6:30 p.m.
Tailgating will be a significant part of the game day atmosphere, with guidelines indicating that tailgating must conclude at kickoff. Fans are encouraged to arrive early, as parking in the primary tailgating lot of Stadium East is on a first-come, first-served basis, priced at $15. Additionally, a limited number of reserved parking spots are available for purchase through the Lobo Club, providing fans with the opportunity to secure premium parking for the season.
New this year, parking in Stadium East will be managed by attendants to streamline the process. Fans are advised to enter primarily through Gate 9, located at the southeast corner of University Stadium. A designated area for student tailgates will also be established at the south end of Stadium East, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere.
With a focus on enhancing the fan experience, UNM is also expanding parking options further from the stadium. Additional lots, including several CNM lots, will be under UNM parking management on game days, allowing fans to spread out and find convenient parking solutions.
As the Lobos gear up for what promises to be an exhilarating season, Berryman's proactive approach to managing fan expectations and logistical challenges reflects the commitment of UNM athletics to foster a thriving sports culture in Albuquerque.
