The University of West Florida (UWF) football team showcased their prowess in their inaugural Division I road game, defeating the No. 24 Central Arkansas Bears with a commanding score of 42-14. This victory marks a significant milestone for UWF, as they not only claimed their first win in the United Athletic Conference (UAC) but also made history by becoming the first team to defeat ranked opponents in their first two games at the FCS level.
With this win, UWF improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the UAC, demonstrating their ability to compete at the highest levels of college football. The Argonauts displayed a balanced offensive and defensive performance, accumulating 401 total yards while forcing three turnovers against a Central Arkansas team that struggled to find their rhythm.
Quarterback Ty'ray Davis had an impressive outing, completing 14 of 17 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns, while also contributing 75 rushing yards and another touchdown. His ability to connect with multiple receivers was evident, as he and fellow quarterback Donovan Leary combined to complete 17 passes to 11 different players. Gage Armbruster stood out as a key target, racking up 80 receiving yards and a touchdown on just two receptions.
On the other side of the field, Central Arkansas (1-1, 0-1 UAC) managed to accumulate 347 yards of offense, with quarterback Donovyn Omolo accounting for a significant portion of that. Omolo threw for 197 yards, one touchdown, and one interception while also rushing for 125 yards and a touchdown. However, the Bears' efforts fell short against a disciplined UWF defense.
UWF's defense was led by Carson Ratliff, who recorded 11 tackles, while Byron Puryear, Cameron Anderson, and Christian Ware-Terry each contributed with sacks. Roderick Webb was instrumental in the secondary, breaking up three passes and helping to limit Central Arkansas's offensive effectiveness.
The Argonauts wasted no time establishing dominance, jumping to a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Their first scoring drive was set up by a shanked punt that gave UWF excellent field position at the Bears' 7-yard line, allowing Davis to rush for a touchdown on the very next play. A subsequent 42-yard punt return by Cannon Brite positioned UWF for another scoring opportunity, culminating in a three-yard touchdown run by TJ Lane.
Central Arkansas managed to respond with a 44-yard touchdown run by Omolo early in the second quarter, but UWF quickly regained control. A fumble recovery by Will Fennema at the Bears' 46-yard line set up another touchdown drive, with Brite sprinting for a 35-yard score. The Argos extended their lead further with a touchdown pass from Davis to Tyler Dostin just before halftime.
In the second half, A'khoury Lyde returned an interception for a touchdown, marking his second consecutive week with a defensive score. Davis later connected with Armbruster for a 42-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 42-7. Central Arkansas managed to score a late touchdown, but it did little to change the outcome of the game.
UWF will take a break next week before returning to action against Austin Peay on September 19 at 6 p.m. The Governors, who recently defeated Gardner-Webb but lost to Vanderbilt, will present another challenge for the Argonauts as they look to maintain their momentum in the early stages of the season.
