NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt Commodores kicked off their football season with a decisive 28-9 victory over the Austin Peay Governors on Saturday night. The game, held at Vanderbilt Stadium, was interrupted by lightning, leading to an early conclusion with 2:16 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Vanderbilt's quarterback Blaze Berlowitz had a strong performance, throwing for 149 yards and adding 45 rushing yards along with a touchdown. This game marked the first start of Berlowitz's collegiate career, and he was supported by a notable performance from freshman quarterback Jared Curtis, who made headlines after flipping his commitment from Georgia last December. Curtis made his debut just before halftime and played through the fourth quarter as Vanderbilt secured their lead.
The Commodores took the lead in the second quarter thanks to Brock Taylor, who successfully kicked two field goals, including a 37-yarder that put Vanderbilt ahead 8-6. A unique play occurred when Martel Hight returned a blocked extra point attempt by Austin Peay for a two-point conversion. Sedrick Alexander also contributed with a 60-yard run and an 18-yard touchdown, showcasing the Commodores' offensive depth.
In the fourth quarter, Josiah Broxton added to Vanderbilt's lead by returning a rushed punt after a high snap for a 27-yard touchdown. This play further solidified the Commodores' dominance in the game.
On the other side, Austin Peay's quarterback Chris Parson threw for 116 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Denver Harper for the Governors' only touchdown of the game, which briefly gave them a 6-5 lead in the first quarter. Hamilton DiBoyan also contributed with a 51-yard field goal. However, the Governors struggled to protect Parson, who was sacked five times throughout the match, although they managed to avoid significant penalties with only two infractions.
Despite the win, Vanderbilt's coach Clark Lea acknowledged there were areas for improvement, particularly regarding discipline, as the team committed nine penalties for a total of 73 yards. A holding penalty negated a potential touchdown run by Alexander, forcing the Commodores to settle for a field goal on their opening drive. Additionally, a personal foul on Hight occurred just before Austin Peay's touchdown.
Looking ahead, Austin Peay will host Morehead State next Saturday, while Vanderbilt will face Delaware at home. Both teams will aim to build on their opening performances as they navigate the early stages of the season.
