Vernell Brown III, a sophomore wide receiver for the Florida Gators, is gearing up for an impressive 2026 season. After a standout freshman year where he excelled in returning punts and kicks, Brown has earned a spot on the preseason All-SEC third team as a return specialist. Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 178 pounds, he is determined to build on his success and contribute significantly to the Gators' special teams.
Florida football head coach Jon Sumrall has prioritized special teams since taking the helm, bringing in former Tulane special teams coaches, including Johnathan Galante and Greg McMahon, who previously served as the special teams coordinator for the New Orleans Saints from 2008 to 2016. This focus on special teams is expected to provide Brown with the support and strategy needed to enhance his performance on the field.
Reflecting on his achievements, Brown stated, "I just want to take advantage of my opportunities. But as far as third team All SEC, you know, that’s fuel to the fire for me. There are three teams and the third team isn’t the best team. So that’s just fuel to the fire.” His determination is evident as he looks to improve his standing and make a more significant impact this season.
Last season, Brown ranked sixth in the SEC for punt return yardage, averaging 11.7 yards per return. He accumulated a total of 261 return yards over 18 kick and punt returns, showcasing his ability to be a game-changer. Notably, he was one of only two freshmen in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) to achieve five punt returns of 20 yards or more, highlighting his potential as a dynamic return specialist.
As the Gators prepare for the upcoming season, Brown is expected to focus primarily on punt returns, with cornerback J'Vari Flowers and running back London Montgomery set to handle kickoff returns. However, he remains open to returning kickoffs if necessary, stating, "Obviously, that’s their job, that’s part of their role on the team, not many my role so I don’t really worry about it too much. But if I have to, I will.” This versatility could prove vital for the Gators as they navigate their schedule.
One of Brown’s primary goals for the season is to return a punt for a touchdown, a feat that the Gators have not accomplished since Kadarius Toney's 50-yard punt return for a score against Kentucky on November 28, 2020. Brown expressed his ambition, saying, "That’s always a want to. As a punt returner you always want to take everyone to the house.” With his motivation and the support of his coaching staff, Brown is poised to make significant strides in the upcoming season.
