Former San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis has weighed in on Brandon Aiyuk’s current struggles in the NFL, offering straightforward advice: it’s time for Aiyuk to stop talking and focus on his game. Davis, who enjoyed a successful career with the 49ers, believes that Aiyuk’s media presence is only complicating his situation.
In a recent interview with Casino.ca, Davis stated, “I think Brandon Aiyuk needs to stay out of the media, be quiet, and do what he has to do. He’s only hurting himself. Buddy, you are not bigger than the NFL.” These comments come at a crucial time for Aiyuk, who finds himself sidelined as the 49ers finalize their roster decisions.
General manager John Lynch confirmed that Aiyuk remains on the reserve/left squad list, indicating that he is not part of the team's immediate plans. “He’s just not on our roster,” Lynch remarked, emphasizing the reality of Aiyuk's current status. This designation allowed the 49ers to move forward with their roster without including Aiyuk, who has been absent due to injuries.
The situation has taken a turn for the bizarre, as the 49ers previously voided approximately $27 million in guaranteed money owed to Aiyuk. This decision stemmed from the team's assessment that he did not meet contractual obligations while recovering from ACL and MCL injuries that have kept him off the field since the 2024 season.
Aiyuk’s path to reinstatement is complicated; he must apply for it before he can return to play. However, he has expressed reluctance to engage with the 49ers, stating in July that he would not be “doing any kind of business” with the organization. This has left him in a precarious position, as he desires another opportunity in the league but is hesitant to take the necessary steps to facilitate that return.
Davis believes that Aiyuk’s current approach is detrimental to his career. “Sit in the back seat, put a zip on his mouth, and be quiet,” Davis advised. “Play the game of football, man. Everybody knows you can play.” While he refrained from labeling Aiyuk as a bad teammate, Davis noted that the receiver is becoming a distraction, which could hinder his chances of finding success elsewhere.
Aiyuk’s talent was once recognized with a lucrative four-year, $120 million extension, but the ongoing drama surrounding his situation has led the 49ers to build their roster without him. As they move forward with players like Mike Evans, De’Zhaun Stribling, and Deebo Samuel, Aiyuk’s future remains uncertain, and his career hangs in the balance.
