SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Angelo State University football team will kick off the 2026 season at home against Fort Hays State at 7 p.m. Thursday at LeGrand Stadium.

The Rams finished 6-5 overall last year and 4-5 in the Lone Star Conference, and they missed out on making the playoffs.

Jeff Girsch's squad comes into the 2026 campaign hoping to make a run at the LSC championship.

The first five games of the season are against teams that are currently ranked or are receiving votes in the preseason poll.

ASU and Fort Hays both received votes in the poll, but they aren't in the Top 25 heading into Thursday's showdown. The Rams are 1-1 all-time against the Tigers, including a 28-7 win on the road last season.

Girsch talked earlier this week about having the luxury of the most-loaded quarterbacks room he's had in his long tenure at ASU.

Redshirt sophomore Ayden Arp is scheduled to start at QB for the Rams in the opener. In last year's season-ending loss against West Texas A&M, Arp threw for 189 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The dual-threat signal-caller showed some fancy footwork against the Buffaloes, finishing with 20 carries for 144 yards and a 56-yard TD scamper.
