Vikings Prepare Kyler Murray for Season Opener Against Packers

The Minnesota Vikings are set to kick off the 2026 NFL season with a highly anticipated matchup against the Green Bay Packers on September 13. This season marks a significant transition for the Vikings as they have appointed Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback, a decision that comes after a competitive battle for the position during organized team activities (OTAs) and early training camp, where he outperformed J.J. McCarthy.

Murray, known for his dynamic mobility and dual-threat capability, is expected to inject a new energy into the Vikings' offense. However, head coach Kevin O’Connell is receiving guidance on how to best utilize Murray’s skills while minimizing the risk of injury. Phil Mackey, a host on “Purple Daily,” emphasized the importance of a conservative approach to Murray’s running game.

In a recent discussion, Mackey pointed out that during his second year in the NFL, Murray averaged eight to nine rushing attempts per game. However, following a knee injury, that number has decreased to four to five attempts per game. “If it’s 10 times a game, way too much risk,” Mackey advised, suggesting that a more measured approach would be beneficial. He believes that if Murray can run four to five times, especially during critical third-down situations, it could enhance the Vikings' chances of success.

Judd Zulgad, Mackey’s co-host, echoed these sentiments, asserting that the Vikings will likely refrain from employing Murray in the same manner as the Arizona Cardinals did in the past. Zulgad noted that over-relying on Murray’s legs could lead to injury, which the team wants to avoid. “If you have him run like he did against the Cardinals, you’re gonna get him hurt,” Zulgad cautioned, indicating that the Vikings are looking for a different offensive strategy that leverages Murray’s strengths without exposing him to unnecessary risks.

O’Connell has expressed enthusiasm about having Murray at the helm. During the Vikings’ final preseason game against the Denver Broncos, he highlighted Murray’s ability to make plays and his impressive accuracy as a passer. “He’s career-wise a very high-completion type of thrower,” O’Connell remarked, emphasizing the importance of simplicity in the offense. He believes that allowing Murray to focus on completing passes while also incorporating a strong running game will be key to the Vikings’ success this season.

The Vikings’ opening game against the Packers is not just a regular season matchup; it carries significant weight in the NFC North rivalry. Both teams will be looking to establish dominance early in the season, and how the Vikings utilize Murray could be pivotal in determining the outcome. With the coaching staff's cautious approach and Murray's unique skill set, fans are eager to see how this new chapter unfolds for the Minnesota Vikings.
