As the high school sports season heats up, it’s time to recognize the exceptional talent emerging from Stark County. The voting for the Anderson Aid Pest Control Stark County Athlete of the Week is now live, allowing fans to support their favorite athletes from August 24 to August 30. This week, the nominees include standout performers in various sports, showcasing their impressive skills and contributions to their teams.
Voting will remain open until 5 p.m. on Thursday, with the winners announced the following morning on CantonRep.com. Each week, one girl and one boy will be honored for their athletic achievements, and this week’s nominees have certainly made a strong case for recognition.
Among the girls nominated, Kyla Brinton from Lake soccer stands out after scoring three goals in a decisive 6-2 victory over Perry. Sophia Burick of Minerva soccer also had a remarkable week, netting both goals in a 2-0 win against Ridgewood and later scoring the game-winner with just two minutes remaining in a 2-1 triumph over Central Catholic.
In cross country, Irelyn Johnson of Marlington, the defending Division III state champion, showcased her talent by winning the Gold Division race at the HOKA Night Showcase with a time of 18:15.57. Ricci Mendoza from Canton McKinley soccer made headlines by scoring four goals in a commanding 6-0 win over Coventry, while Molly Nadel of North Canton Hoover tennis went undefeated in singles matches, achieving a 4-0 record for the week.
Other notable nominees include Abby Parsons from Jackson cross country, who played a pivotal role in her team’s victory at the GlenOak Golden Eagle Invitational by finishing as the individual runner-up in 19:27.31, and Taeko Thompson of Canton McKinley volleyball, who surpassed 1,000 career assists during a match against Louisville and contributed significantly in a five-set win over Green.
On the boys' side, Brice Fuller from Fairless cross country, the reigning Division III state champion, finished first among a competitive field at the Pickerington North Invitational with a time of 15:26.07. Guillermo Graves of Canton South soccer had a standout performance as well, scoring two goals and providing two assists in a 5-2 victory over Fairless.
Colin Harris from Northwest soccer also made his mark by scoring two goals and assisting two others in a 5-1 win over Coventry, while Jonathan Lemon from Perry football had a career day, rushing for 212 yards on 16 carries and scoring three touchdowns in a dominant performance against STVM.
Additional nominees include Noah Morckel from Minerva soccer, who scored five goals in a 7-1 win over Edison, and Mikey Ritterbeck from Fairless football, who showcased his versatility with 109 rushing yards, three touchdowns, and an impressive performance in passing. Colby Schrader of East Canton football also had a remarkable game, rushing for 275 yards and four touchdowns, further solidifying his candidacy for the week.
This week’s nominees exemplify the spirit of high school athletics in Stark County, and fans are encouraged to participate in the voting process to help recognize these talented athletes.
