As the fall sports season unfolds, the spotlight often shines brightly on football and volleyball. However, in the Gainesville area, there are several other sports thriving, particularly cross country, which is home to a number of talented athletes.
This year, the focus turns to recognizing these exceptional runners. Following a recent celebration of swim and dive athletes, the attention now shifts to cross country, where schools like Buchholz and Oak Hall have established themselves as dominant forces in the region.
Despite their historical success, both the Buchholz Bobcats and Oak Hall Eagles find themselves with relatively young rosters this season. This youth may create an opportunity for other teams to step into the spotlight, making the competition even more exciting.
To honor the outstanding talent in the area, fans are invited to participate in polls to determine the best high school cross country runners. Separate polls have been created for both boys and girls, featuring a selection of 18 boys and 8 girls who have made a significant impact during the 2025 season. The nominees were chosen from the All-Area teams and recommendations from coaches through an anonymous survey.
The polls will remain open until noon on Sunday, September 6, allowing fans to vote as many times as they wish. This is a great opportunity for the community to support their favorite runners and encourage participation by sharing the polls with friends and family.
As the voting progresses, it will be interesting to see which athletes rise to the top and how this may influence the upcoming cross country season. The enthusiasm surrounding these polls reflects the growing interest in high school sports beyond the more commonly highlighted football and volleyball.
Good luck to all the nominees as they compete not just on the course, but also for the recognition they deserve from their community!
