This Thursday marks the second week of the high school football season, and both Mendon and Colon are eager to improve their records to 2-0. Mendon, known for its strong running game, showcased its offensive prowess last week by amassing 311 rushing yards in a commanding victory over Marlette.
In addition to their typical ground attack, Mendon surprised fans with a touchdown pass from quarterback Owen Klingler to receiver Jaiden Moyer, covering 47 yards. Despite this unexpected play, the Hornets remain focused on their upcoming challenge against Morenci, who also enters the game with a win under their belt after defeating Bellevue 38-22 last week.
Mendon’s head coach, Bobby Kretschman, expressed satisfaction with his team's performance in their season opener but emphasized the need for continuous improvement. "We played very clean in Week 1 and got off to a great start, giving them only one possession to our three," Kretschman noted. He also highlighted the importance of consistency on both sides of the ball and addressing missed tackles as they prepare for Morenci's counter and misdirection plays.
The Hornets' defensive strategy will be crucial against Morenci, which is known for applying pressure at the line of scrimmage. Kretschman stressed the need for his offensive line to communicate effectively and handle blitzes to maintain their running game. "As always for us, the key is to play fast, physical, and aggressive on both sides of the ball and not beat ourselves," he added.
Meanwhile, Colon is also looking to build on its successful start after a dominant 44-0 victory over Burr Oak last week. The Magi's head coach, Robbie Hattan, is optimistic as they prepare to host Adrian Lenawee Christian, a team known for its competitive spirit. This matchup will be the first road game of the season for Lenawee, who played their opener against Sandusky St. Mary's Central Catholic from Ohio.
Historically, Colon and Lenawee have faced each other in several significant games, with the last meeting resulting in a 40-24 win for Colon in the 2022 season. Hattan has noted the positive changes in the program since his return, stating, "Returning has been a blessing. The culture is starting to turn back to the standards we have set as a program a long time ago." He acknowledged the challenge posed by Lenawee's pass-heavy offense, emphasizing the need for his defense to remain disciplined and tackle well in open space.
As both teams prepare for their respective games, they are also aware of the importance of teamwork and consistency. Hattan remarked, "We have to learn to trust our teammates and know that if we all collectively do our jobs, we will be successful as a team."
In addition to the Mendon and Colon games, several other local teams will be competing this Thursday, including Sturgis, Three Rivers, and White Pigeon, all seeking their first wins of the season. Sturgis, coming off a narrow overtime loss to Coldwater, will face Battle Creek Pennfield, while Three Rivers aims to bounce back against Dowagiac. White Pigeon, after a tough defeat last week, will look to turn things around against Cassopolis.
This week promises to be an exciting one in high school football, with teams striving for early-season momentum as they head into the heart of the schedule.
