The West York Bulldogs continued their successful start to the season with a convincing 34-12 victory over Red Lion at Horn Field on Thursday night. This win marks their second consecutive triumph, bolstered by the impressive leadership of quarterback Jensen Ferber, who has been a pivotal figure for the team.
West York head coach Ron Miller has emphasized the importance of Ferber's growth as a leader, noting that it goes beyond mere statistics. The junior quarterback has evolved from a freshman still finding his footing into a crucial component of the Bulldogs' success. Miller praised Ferber's ability to manage the offense effectively, protect the football, and distribute it to his teammates. "His leadership at practice, his leadership in the weight room, he’s really just a special young man and we’re blessed to have him," Miller remarked.
The Bulldogs wasted no time establishing dominance in the game. Following an opening drive that culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by Za'mir Harris, West York's defense quickly asserted itself. They forced Red Lion into a three-and-out on their first possession, and shortly thereafter, Julius Fuentes-Bream capitalized on a blocked punt, returning it for another score.
Ferber also contributed significantly to the scoreboard, connecting with Fuentes-Bream for a 25-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. He later added a 15-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, showcasing his dual-threat capability as a quarterback.
However, penalties plagued the Bulldogs and allowed Red Lion to stay competitive. In a span of just six minutes during the second quarter, Red Lion's Julian Credone managed to narrow the gap after catching an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Martin. Another West York penalty set the Lions up at the nine-yard line, where Credone scored again, cutting the deficit to just one score.
"We were saying at halftime that that wasn’t us in the first half and that we knew we could do better than that," Ferber reflected after the game. He noted that the Bulldogs demonstrated their true potential in the second half, starting with an impressive 80-yard run on their first offensive play after the break.
Running back Aidan Wagner set the tone for the second half with a remarkable 84-yard touchdown run on West York's initial possession. Ferber then added to the Bulldogs' lead with his own 15-yard touchdown run, solidifying the final score at 34-12.
Coach Miller expressed pride in his team's ability to respond after a challenging week. "We had a big game last week and a short week, so we were beat up a little bit. Such a great win. Any win’s a great win," he stated, highlighting the resilience of his players.
