Western Illinois University has completed installation of a new synthetic turf surface at Hanson Field in Macomb, a project recognized during a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce on Aug. 26.

The event took place at Hanson Field, according to a community announcement. The project replaces the stadium's previous turf surface after it reached the end of its expected useful life and prepares the venue for the upcoming football season.

The redesigned field includes the Rocky Head mascot logo and Ohio Valley Conference logos.

SprinTurf LLC was selected through a competitive bidding process to complete the installation. According to the announcement, the company has installed more than 3,500 athletic fields across the country.

Funding for the turf replacement came from resources generated by Leatherneck Athletics, including support from the WIU Football Player Enhancement Fund.

“We are thankful for everything our student-athletes and coaches have given to help make this project a reality,” said Jeremy Robinett, Acting Administrator in Charge of Athletics. “Their efforts are creating a lasting improvement that will benefit current and future student-athletes while also enhancing the experience for the many campus and community members who utilize Hanson Field.”

Project supports athletics, campus activities

University officials said the new surface is intended to provide an updated playing field for Leatherneck student-athletes while improving the appearance of Hanson Field.

Head Football Coach Joe Davis said the installation is part of ongoing facility improvements, with student-athlete health and safety remaining a priority.

The field will host six home football games along with performances by the Marching Leathernecks and activities involving student organizations.
