What did Sam Cosmi’s illness teach us, Wednesday?
Wednesday, the Commanders and Ravens were holding their joint practice at the Ravens facility. Cosmi, Washington’s right guard, suddenly was ill and not able to accompany the team to the joint practice. It showed what the offensive line would look like in an NFL game right now without three starters.

Left tackle Laremy Tunsil tore a triceps muscle in his left arm, had surgery, and could be gone for the season. Center Nick Allegretti has only been able to practice two days and was injured both days. He remains out for Friday’s game against the Ravens. Head coach Dan Quinn told the media Wednesday morning that Cosmi had become ill and had to stay at the team hotel, missing Wednesday’s action.
From the players’ quotes and media who observed the scrimmage vs the Ravens, the offensive line clearly struggled. Well, of course they did. They were missing three starters, and center was already a very delicate issue. Consequently, what you saw Wednesday was the Commanders’ OLine needing more quality depth.
Unfortunately, it was a preview for what could very well transpire in the regular season. Look, they already have two starters injured; what makes you think they won’t have at least two more injuries to the line this season, which result in missed games?
What do you think GM Adam Peters has been showing us by his going out and signing offensive linemen during training camp? He is hoping some of them prove better than their current linemen, who are seven, eight, and nine in the position group. Hey, the NFL really is a year-to-year league. Peters, Quinn, Blough and others already believe, from what they are seeing in camp, the line is weaker than they thought it was going to be.
Roster cut-down day is Sunday. It shouldn’t be a surprise to any of us when you hear/read that Peters has plucked another offensive lineman, a center who some NFL team was hoping to make it to their own Practice Squad. Peters will grab one, and therefore have to release another Commanders center.
Keep in mind, the new center will not be a 2025 All-Pro. Also, Peters may not want to wait until Sunday to see who gets released. Has Peters reached the point where he would be willing to trade one of his receivers, ensuring he gets a center he wants, rather than sitting back and waiting to see what centers are going to be released?
Might Peters be on the phone this weekend seeing what he can obtain in a trade for a Luke McCaffrey, Treylon Burks, or Jaylin Lane?
