Sophomore defenseman Matthew Mayich transferred to Arizona State for the upcoming 2026-27 season before he collapsed during an outdoor exercise on the morning of Aug. 20, the first day of classes for the fall semester.
The 21-year-old native of Stoney Creek, Ontario, Mayich was selected 170th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2023 NHL Draft. In 2024, Mayich participated in the Blues’ training camp and their prospect showcase, where he showed off his scoring touch with a goal.
He played his first NCAA season with Clarkson in 2025-26, where he tallied 15 points (seven goals and eight assists) and 28 blocked shots in 34 games. He led all Clarkson freshmen in time on ice with 19:47 minutes per game.
In Game 2 of the ECAC quarterfinals, Mayich helped eliminate Quinnipiac with a shorthanded goal to tie the game and an assist on the game-winner in the 4-3 win.
Known for being a polished, two-way defenseman, Mayich played his junior hockey career with the Ottawa 67's in the Ontario Hockey League, one of the three best junior leagues in Canada.
He spent all four seasons of his career from 2021-25 with the 67’s, recording 99 points (21-78–99) across 256 regular-season games. His leadership elevated him to serve as an alternate captain for the club in his last two seasons.
