Enzo Fernández was a notable absence from Chelsea's squad for its Carabao Cup match against Luton Town on Thursday, Aug. 27.
The Argentina midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, and he did not even make the bench for the match at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking a day ahead of the Luton match, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso said he was planning for Fernández to be with his squad.
"Yes, we expect that he's involved. He's trained, he's training really well, he's a good professional and he will be involved," Alonso said at a press conference on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
He added: "We want to have the best team possible. We know his qualities, he has shown it and we have to wait, but we will think about tomorrow and let's see how things develop."
But Fernández was not present in Chelsea's squad for the second-round tie, increasing speculation over his future.
