PARKER CITY — Winchester Community football celebrated its first victory of the 2026 season with a decisive 32-8 win over Monroe Central, overcoming an initial 0-2 start. Coach Mike Jones expressed confidence in his team's potential despite their early struggles, stating, "I’m not sure I would say that we’ve been frustrated — we’ve been close. Mistakes, just small breakdowns, and coaching younger kids that have maybe not been in the fire as much as some other kids. They made mistakes that cost us probably a couple of touchdowns the last two weeks." Jones noted that the team managed to eliminate nearly all of those mistakes in this matchup.
The Golden Falcons' performance was highlighted by their mistake-free football, which proved crucial in the fifth edition of Randolph County's Golden Rivalry. Winchester's defense was particularly impressive, limiting Monroe Central to a mere 33 rushing yards and forcing four turnovers, including one interception and three fumble recoveries. This strong defensive showing was a key factor in their victory, allowing the Golden Falcons to control the game effectively.
Winchester set the tone early, scoring on their opening drive with a six-play series that featured all positive yardage. Freshman quarterback Caleb Tarter capped this drive with a 12-yard rushing touchdown. Monroe Central's response was quickly thwarted when junior linebacker JJ Vasquez intercepted a pass on their first drive, halting any momentum the Golden Bears hoped to build.
Although Monroe Central's defense managed to stop Winchester on a subsequent drive, a fumbled handoff was recovered by senior Brennen Lanter, giving the Golden Falcons another opportunity. Shortly thereafter, defensive lineman Jaxson Allen capitalized on another fumble, returning it for a touchdown, marking a memorable moment for the player. Allen remarked, "It’s my first year playing, came back senior year, thought it’d be fun. That was just an unbelievable moment."
Monroe Central did show signs of life in the second half when junior quarterback Elias Hart connected with senior receiver Caden Dance for a 67-yard touchdown pass. However, their efforts were quickly stifled by Winchester's defense, which continued to dominate the game. A blocked punt by freshman Kasen Ramos resulted in a safety, further boosting Winchester's lead and momentum.
Winchester's offense, led by junior running back Joey Vasquez, was equally effective. Vasquez rushed for an unofficial 160 yards and scored two touchdowns, showcasing his ability to break tackles and find openings. Coach Jones praised Vasquez's performance, stating, "He does it every week. First guy never tackles him. Usually, the second or third don’t get him on the ground. What he’s good at, he sees things and sets things up, and he’s got some real running back savvy that is not coaching."
With this victory, Winchester not only secured their first win of the season but also handed Monroe Central their first loss, improving their record to 1-2. The Golden Falcons now carry a two-game winning streak in this rivalry matchup. Monroe Central, which had been averaging 45 points in their first two games, will look to regroup against a tough Tri High team in their next outing. Coach John Hochstetler acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, "We knew this would be a tough fight. We thought we could get them if we got them in the right game, we just couldn’t get that game. We have to do a better job of executing."
Meanwhile, Winchester aims to build on this momentum as they prepare for a matchup against longtime rival Northeastern. Coach Jones believes this victory will instill confidence in his players, stating, "One, it justifies the amount of work that they put in because they’ve worked very hard, and it’s hard to keep kids working really hard when they don’t get wins. And it probably makes them super hungry to start to go get them, because we’ve been so close." With a renewed sense of determination, the Golden Falcons are ready to face the challenges ahead.
