HAMPTON — In the opening game of the season, Winnacunnet High School's football team demonstrated the defensive prowess that head coach Ryan Francoeur had been emphasizing throughout the preseason. The Warriors faced Portsmouth/Oyster River on Friday night, and it took less than four minutes for their defense to make a significant impact.
Winnacunnet opted for a bold move on their first possession, attempting to convert a fourth-and-inches from their own 18-yard line. However, senior running back Thomas Lyons was stopped short, giving Portsmouth excellent field position at the Warriors' 18 with 8:07 left in the first quarter.
Portsmouth appeared ready to capitalize on this opportunity. Quarterback Reece Green connected with receiver Sam Biddle for a 9-yard gain on the first play, but a false-start penalty set them back. Following a modest 2-yard gain by Demitrius Tsakiris, Green's third-down pass fell incomplete under pressure from defensive end Ryder Thurlow. This series ended with a missed 30-yard field-goal attempt by the Clippers, allowing Winnacunnet to escape the early threat unscathed.
Coach Francoeur praised his defense, stating, "Our defense, like so many times, picked us up. As coaches, sometimes we pick the players up, and a lot of times they pick us up. The defense picked up the team and picked up me on that series." This sentiment reflects the critical role the defense played throughout the game.
On the other side, Portsmouth's head coach Brian Pafford expressed disappointment over his team's inability to score after gaining advantageous field position. He remarked, "We needed to at least get points on the board. The missed field goal didn’t help, and an untimely penalty didn’t help, either." This missed opportunity would prove significant as the game progressed.
Winnacunnet, which returned eight starters from last year's playoff team, showcased a formidable defense that limited Portsmouth to just 206 total yards and only one touchdown throughout the contest. The Clippers' lone score came from Tsakiris, who rushed for a 22-yard touchdown with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter, tying the game at 6-6.
However, the Warriors' defense tightened its grip after that point. Thurlow scored his first of two fourth-quarter touchdowns, putting Winnacunnet ahead 13-6 with 11:21 left on the clock. Following this go-ahead score, Portsmouth struggled to respond, failing to record a first down on any of their subsequent five possessions. The Clippers' only notable gain came on the final play of the game when Green connected with Biddle for a 37-yard completion as time expired.
This strong defensive performance not only set the tone for the season but also highlighted the resilience and potential of the Winnacunnet Warriors as they look to build on their playoff success from the previous year.
