MADISON – The Wisconsin volleyball team demonstrated resilience and depth as they secured a convincing victory over Auburn, winning 25-23, 25-17, 25-20 in the Big Ten/SEC Challenge on September 3. This win came less than 24 hours after a grueling five-set match against No. 17 Florida, marking a successful weekend for the fifth-ranked Badgers as they improved their record to 3-3 for the season.
Despite the absence of key players Grace Egan and Jaela Auguste, Wisconsin showcased their talent and determination on the court. Head coach Kelly Sheffield noted the competitive nature of the match, which featured 17 ties and eight lead changes. He expressed satisfaction with the team's growth and ability to handle close sets, stating, "We’re playing a lot of really, really close sets, and things happen. There’s a back-and-forth element to it, and we’re growing. … I like where we’re at. I like how we’re learning."
One standout performer for the Badgers was freshman Halle Thompson, who made her mark by leading the team with 11 kills, a significant achievement considering her previous career-high was just four kills against then-No. 4 Pittsburgh. Thompson's aggressive play was evident, and Sheffield praised her energy, likening her impact to "a double shot of espresso." He emphasized the importance of her contributions, particularly in a back-to-back match scenario, stating, "We needed her. We needed those swings. We needed her 30 swings." Alongside Thompson, Eva Travis also shone with 10 kills, further solidifying the Badgers' offensive strength.
While Auburn recorded a slight edge in total blocks with a 5-4 advantage, Wisconsin's blocking performance was more effective than the statistics suggested. Sheffield highlighted the challenges posed by Auburn's fast-paced offensive strategy, which required the Badgers to adapt defensively. He commended his team's ability to position themselves effectively and maintain discipline in their blocking technique. Middle blockers Natalie Wardlow and Lynney Tarnow played crucial roles, with Wardlow contributing eight kills and Tarnow adding seven, showcasing their ability to step up in the absence of injured teammates.
Wisconsin's victory was particularly impressive given the missing contributions from Egan and Auguste. Egan's absence was noted as an undisclosed injury, marking her second missed match in a three-match stretch. Auguste has been sidelined for four consecutive games due to an abdominal strain. You like to be at full strength, but that just doesn’t happen. … We’ve had a few, and we’ve had to deal with it. But on the other side of that is opportunity."
