Luis Gil has not pitched much for the New York Yankees this season and has spent a chunk of the season injured.
Gil did not start the season on the Opening Day roster by design. He was activated and made four starts before he was optioned again. He had a 6.05 ERA in four starts, and the team decided to send him down. He wound up on the injured list with a shoulder injury in May.
He came off the injured list on August 11 and made a couple of rehab starts for High-A Hudson Valley before going back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. However, in his latest return to Triple-A, he has been working out of the bullpen.
In his last two outings, he has gone 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. He has five strikeouts in that span. He has scattered some hits, but has not allowed a run to score. His fastball has also reached 97.6 mph.
Even his two starts in Hudson Valley were short, essentially serving as an opener. Including those games, he has gone 6 2/3 innings this month with eight strikeouts and no earned runs. Opponents are hitting .167 against him.
Gil was the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year, making 29 starts for the Yankees and helping them reach the World Series. Injuries have hurt him the last two years, and there is really no spot for him in the rotation right now. However, when the rosters expand in September, he could be used as an opener or bullpen arm for the Yankees.
