21-Year-Old College Hockey Player Hospitalized After Collapsing During Outdoor Workout in Ariz.

An Arizona State University (ASU) hockey player remains in the hospital after collapsing following an outdoor workout last week.

The 21-year-old — identified by his family as Matthew Mayich, a sophomore defenseman from Ontario, Canada — exercised on the morning of Aug. 20 before collapsing, according to local media outlet AZ Family. 

Tempe Fire Medical Rescue teams responded to reports of a heat-related illness at ASU’s Joe Selleh Track in Tempe at 8:30 a.m., a City of Tempe spokesperson told The Arizona Republic. 

Mayich was then rushed to a hospital in Phoenix after suffering a potential cardiac event, per the outlet. ASU declined to identify the athlete but confirmed that a hockey player had collapsed during an outdoor workout.

The circumstances around Mayich’s collapse remain unclear. 

Arizona currently has an extreme heat warning, and temperatures for Wednesday, Aug. 26 are expected to reach highs of 114 degrees, according to AccuWeather. 

The Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce hosted a virtual prayer service for Mayich on Facebook on Tuesday, Aug. 25. 

“🙏💙 Prayers for Matthew Mayich 💙🙏Please join in sending prayers and positive thoughts to Matthew Mayich, from Stoney Creek, Ontario, now a sophomore at Clarkson University, as he faces a very difficult time,” it wrote. 

“Let’s come together as a community and show Matthew and his family our love, strength and support. 🙏💙,” the post added.

Mayich’s cousin, Victoria Beara, said, “Even though we are going through this heartbreak, it is truly such a blessing to see everyone praying and just the impact Matthew has had on so many people,” per The Arizona Republic. 

The incident, which occurred on one of the first days of the fall semester, is now being investigated by ASU, per the outlet. 

Mayich started his college hockey career at Clarkson University in New York before transferring to ASU. In 2023, he was a National Hockey League (NHL) sixth-round pick of the St. Louis Blues, per USA Today. 

ASU and the City of Tempe did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
