KARACHI: In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Asim Khan reached the semi-finals of the Pakistan Navy Fleet Club Open International Squash Championship by defeating the top seed, Noor Zaman, at the Pakistan Navy Roshan Khan-Jahangir Khan Squash Complex on Sunday. This victory marks a significant milestone for Khan, who is currently ranked 78th in the world.
The match began with a challenging start for Asim, as he lost the first game 9-11. However, he quickly regrouped and showcased his resilience by winning the next three games with scores of 11-9, 11-1, and 11-3. The match concluded when Noor Zaman was forced to retire due to an injury towards the end of the fourth game, allowing Asim to secure his spot in the semi-finals.
Following his victory, Asim expressed his satisfaction with the win, stating, "I am feeling great, it was a tough match. My performances weren’t up to the mark for the past couple of years so it feels good to win against my team-mate and top-seed." His strategic approach after losing the first game focused on analyzing Noor's gameplay, which he found challenging given Noor's skill level.
"Noor is a very skillful player and it’s very difficult to read his game," Asim explained. "So my focus in the first game was to read him and then execute my plan of keeping him in the corners. Thankfully the strategy worked." He emphasized the importance of maintaining concentration against a player of Noor's caliber, which ultimately contributed to his success.
Asim Khan's next challenge will be against Salman Khalil, who advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Mohamed Naseer in a straight-sets victory. The anticipation for this match is high, as both players aim to secure a place in the finals.
In another quarter-final match, veteran player Nasir Iqbal also made headlines by defeating Hamza Khan in a closely contested match that ended with scores of 5-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, and 8-11. Nasir, who is 32 years old, acknowledged the difficulty of the match, particularly as Hamza mounted a strong comeback after Nasir won the first two games. "It is a major event for me so I am glad I am able to perform well up till now," Nasir said, reflecting on his performance.
Looking ahead, Nasir will face Egypt’s Yassin Elshafei, who won his quarter-final match against Ali Tolba 3-2. Nasir expressed his readiness for this match, acknowledging Elshafei's experience but remaining confident in his own abilities. "He is an experienced player; we can’t take the match up easily but I am ready," he stated.
The Pakistan Navy Fleet Club Open International Squash Championship features a prize purse of $41,000, and the finals are scheduled to take place on Tuesday. Asim Khan's impressive performance not only highlights his potential but also adds excitement to the tournament as he aims for further success.
