As the Naugatuck High School football team gears up for the upcoming season, junior running back Brandon Andoh is determined to reclaim his status as a standout player. After a promising freshman year, where he rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 15 touchdowns, Andoh faced a challenging sophomore season marred by injuries. Now, he is ready to prove himself once again on the field.
Andoh's freshman campaign was nothing short of spectacular, showcasing his speed and agility with an impressive average of 9.0 yards per carry. However, last season, his performance dipped significantly, with only 483 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. The decline was largely attributed to a broken bone in his foot and a torn ligament in his toe, which hindered his ability to perform at his best. Reflecting on the past year, Andoh acknowledged the mental challenges that accompanied his physical setbacks, stating, "The injury kind of set me back mentally and took away from my motivation."
Despite these challenges, Andoh is approaching this season with renewed vigor and a strong desire to lead by example. He emphasized the importance of maturity and discipline in his development as a player, saying, "I have a big opportunity to become something great, so I have to mature enough to be a leader and be disciplined enough to be more consistent if I truly want to be great." His mindset has shifted, and he feels a personal obligation to demonstrate that he is not only back but better than before.
Under the guidance of head coach Chris Anderson, Andoh has been working hard to regain his form. Coach Anderson has noted Andoh's exceptional talent, referring to him as one of the fastest players on the team alongside running back/quarterback Qwentarvous Lee. "He is just a natural ballcarrier," Anderson remarked. "He can maneuver himself to make people miss, and he runs the ball hard." This season, Andoh aims to leverage his physicality and speed to instill fear in opposing defenders.
Looking ahead, Andoh is optimistic about the Greyhounds' prospects this season. After finishing with a disappointing 4-6 record last year, he believes that the team's improved experience and talent will contribute to a successful campaign. With key players like quarterback Sean DiBona and a strong offensive line, Andoh feels confident in the team's potential. He stated, "I feel really good physically and mentally. Our team is looking very good because we have a lot of upperclassmen and we are in the gym twice a day putting in the work."
Andoh has set ambitious personal goals for the season, aiming to rush for 2,200 yards and score 27 touchdowns. He also expressed a desire to enhance his versatility by becoming a dual-threat player, capable of contributing in both the running and passing games. "I want to be more of a threat in the passing game," he explained. "I want teams to not know how to defend me by being a dual threat."
As the season approaches, the Naugatuck Greyhounds are looking to build on their past experiences and aim for a successful run. With Andoh's determination and talent, he is poised to be a key player in their quest for victory. Coach Anderson believes in Andoh's potential, stating, "He has tremendous potential and can be one of the best players in the league. With him on the field, we are a much better football team." As Andoh prepares to take the field, he is ready to show that he is back and ready to dominate.
