Breaking: Liverpool reach ‘agreement in principle’ to sign Bradley Barcola from PSG

Liverpool have reportedly reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with Paris Saint-Germain to sign Bradley Barcola.

The France international has been the Reds’ primary target throughout the summer transfer window, and weeks of back-and-forth with the player and his club finally seem to have come to fruition.

Several trusted reporters had indicated over the past 48 hours that a breakthrough between the two clubs appeared imminent, and that now seems to have materialised.

On Thursday morning, the ever-reliable David Ornstein reported for The Athletic that Liverpool and PSG have now reached an ‘agreement in principle’ for the transfer of Barcola to Anfield.

The clubs reportedly agreed terms on a deal to the tune of £120m overnight, with more than £100m of that guaranteed to be paid up front.

The player had made known his desire not to extend terms on his contract in Paris and has played no part for Luis Enrique’s side in their first three matches of this season.

Liverpool’s patience with Barcola pursuit is finally about to pay off

It’s taken quite a bit of time, but finally Liverpool seem to have a transfer for Barcola effectively sewn up.

A deal has yet to be officially completed, and the player would still need to have a medical with the Reds, so any champagne over the move ought to remain on ice until it’s officially announced by the Merseyside club.

However, that would now seem to be a formality, and the transfer could plausibly go through a few days before the summer window shuts next Tuesday, sparing us a repeat of the photo finish with Alexander Isak’s capture from Newcastle 12 months ago.

For a prospective £120m, Barcola will be expected to make an immediate impact at Liverpool, but they wouldn’t have agreed to pay that much or pursued him throughout the entire summer if they didn’t view him as the elite difference maker in attack to assume that mantle from Mo Salah.

Hopefully this deal can be formally concluded in the next couple of days so that Richard Hughes would still have a little bit of time to pull off one more addition to Andoni Iraola’s squad (ideally a defensive midfielder) before the Tuesday night deadline.
