Carlos Correa Advances Rehabilitation Efforts at Astros' Facility in Florida

Carlos Correa, the Houston Astros' third baseman, is taking significant steps towards a potential return to the major leagues this season as he continues his rehabilitation at the team's minor-league facility in West Palm Beach, Florida. Following ankle surgery to repair a torn peroneus brevis tendon, Correa has been working diligently on his recovery, engaging in hitting drills and fielding practice.

On Saturday, Correa participated in light workouts, hitting in the batting cages and taking ground balls, as confirmed by Astros manager Joe Espada. Correa is scheduled to take additional batting practice on the field in the coming days, which marks a crucial phase in his rehabilitation process.

Espada noted, "Today was kind of a light day, since he traveled yesterday, but all looks good." This positive update comes after Correa underwent surgery in early May, which initially raised concerns that he would miss the entire season. However, his progress has opened the door for a potential return, especially with just 20 games remaining in the regular season and the Astros holding a three-game lead in the American League West standings.

Despite his recent activities, Correa has yet to face live pitching or run the bases, which are critical components of his recovery. He mentioned last week that he is sprinting at about 95% but still needs to test his ankle with more dynamic movements, such as changing direction and sliding. Correa expressed that this training stint in Florida will serve as a significant evaluation period to determine if he can make it back to the field this year.

"We’ve got to rehearse all those game-like situations for him before we continue to move forward," Espada explained. He emphasized the need for gradual increases in Correa's workload each day, underscoring the importance of ensuring the player's readiness for a return to competitive play.

In addition to Correa's progress, the Astros are also monitoring other players in rehabilitation. Outfielder Brice Matthews, recovering from a left knee sprain, is expected to start running the bases this weekend. Matthews has been sidelined since mid-July and could begin a minor-league rehab assignment shortly. Meanwhile, right-hander Mike Burrows, who recently faced a setback due to shoulder inflammation, is engaging in light throwing and will continue his recovery in West Palm Beach when the team embarks on their upcoming road trip.

As the Astros prepare for the final stretch of the season, the potential return of Correa could be pivotal in their quest for postseason success. His experience and skill set would undoubtedly bolster the team's chances as they aim to secure their position in the playoffs.
