Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn met with the media on Tuesday morning ahead of practice. It was Washington’s final training camp practice at home, as the team left Ashburn on Tuesday afternoon to make the short trip north for Wednesday’s joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens.
Quinn began by outlining what the Commanders would be doing in Tuesday’s practice ahead of their trip to Baltimore. Then, the first question he was asked was about the availability of edge Odafe Oweh and cornerback Trey Amos for the Week 1 game at Philadelphia, which is over two weeks away.
“I’d say I’ll have a better answer for that into next week as we get ready for those practices,” Quinn said. “We’re fortunate that we have that space in between. They’re both working hard and making progress, but I don’t know if I’d have a number to gauge it just yet. That would be kind of my time that I’ll have a better sense.”
That didn’t sound too encouraging, did it?
Oweh (calf) hasn’t missed nearly as much time as Amos (ankle). Oweh was dominant in the early part of camp before he was sidelined. As for Amos, he fractured his fibula in Week 10 last season and was on the physically unable to perform list to begin camp. As soon as he was activated, the day after, Amos tweaked his ankle. He hasn’t practiced since. Amos has essentially not practiced all summer, and the Commanders are closing in on Week 1.
The Oweh injury situation seems less murky. Plus, Washington should have a little more depth there. What’s more concerning about Amos is that the Commanders face the explosive Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. Even if Amos returns to practice next week — and that’s a big if — would you trust him on the field in less than two weeks against the defending NFC East champion Eagles?
We’ve reached a point where everyone should be concerned. Questions already existed about the Commanders’ cornerback room. Mike Sainristil and Amik Robertson are the current starters, with veterans Rasul Douglas and Fabian Moreau behind them. Keep in mind, Douglas joined the Commanders in July and Moreau in August when Ahkello Witherspoon suddenly retired.
