Delaware vs Merrimack Prediction: Can the Blue Hen Offense Roll?

Delaware had a great first season as an FBS program, pulling off seven wins and a bowl victory. More than just competitive, the offense showed it could hang with anyone in Conference USA.

The conference season doesn’t start until October, so there’s time to tune up, starting with a Merrimack team that should be competitive enough to make this a ball game.

• Merrimack went 4-8 last season, but it pushed Kent State in a 21-17 loss and battled eventual Conference USA champion Kennesaw State in a 27-13 loss.
• Delaware gets a little extra time after this to get ready for the road game at Vanderbilt. Five of the next eight games are on the road.
• The two programs have never played each other.

This might be the perfect supposedly paycheck game FCS team for Delaware. The Blue Hens need and want to throw to win, but Merrimack has another great pass defense after finishing 11th in the FCS last season. Combine that with a good ground game, and the Warriors should keep this tight.

The Warriors will have another solid ground game, but Gavin Moul and the Blue Hen linebacking corps will take care of that. The offensive scheme is good, but Merrimack has too many new parts to be sharp. Delaware quarterback Nick Minicucci and the Blue Hen passing game will be too consistent – Merrimack will have to push.

The experienced Blue Hen defense will be stronger, but it’s still coming off a season when it struggled against teams that could crank up big yards on the ground. When Delaware was good against the run, it was great overall. It’ll be good enough against the run, and Minicucci and the dangerous offense will take care of the rest.
