With the NFL season on the horizon, the role of rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling in the San Francisco 49ers offense is starting to take shape. During a recent episode of the "49ers Talk" podcast hosted by NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, quarterback Brock Purdy praised Stribling's early efforts in training camp, indicating that he is expected to be a significant contributor to the team’s offensive strategy this year.

Purdy expressed his enthusiasm for Stribling's work ethic, stating, "He’s done an amazing job with coming in and, um, obviously learning the playbook and just keeping his head down and working. He’s going to be a big part of our offense this year, so I’m excited to see him play." This endorsement from Purdy suggests that Stribling's integration into the offense is progressing well, and he is likely to see substantial playing time.

According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, Stribling is expected to take on the role of primary slot receiver while also serving as an understudy to veteran Mike Evans at the X receiver position. Deebo Samuel is anticipated to fill the Z receiver role on the strong side. Barrows noted that while all of the 49ers' receivers will be trained to play multiple positions, Stribling's most immediate path to playing time will be through the slot, with additional opportunities as Evans' backup on the outside.

The 49ers selected Stribling with the No. 33 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, making him the first choice of the second round. His college career was impressive, as he recorded 261 receptions for 2,964 yards and 23 touchdowns across his time at Washington State, Oklahoma State, and Ole Miss. His speed was highlighted by a 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, a trait that many teams value highly, even if his initial role is expected to focus on slot duties.

During the preseason, Stribling showcased his potential, finishing with 11 receptions on 13 targets for 109 yards in the two games he participated in. He did not play in the final preseason game due to a minor shoulder injury, but his performance prior to that has left a positive impression on coaches and teammates alike.

With Purdy's strong endorsement of Stribling's dedication and Barrows' analysis of his versatile role, it appears that Stribling is on track to make a meaningful impact in the 49ers offense during his rookie season. While he may primarily operate from the slot, his ability to adapt to various positions could enhance his contributions as the season progresses.
