Geno Smith Returns to New York Jets as Starting Quarterback After Raiders' Struggles

The New York Jets have made a significant decision by reappointing Geno Smith as their starting quarterback, following a low-cost trade that has reignited his career. Coach Aaron Glenn wasted no time in announcing Smith's return, marking a pivotal moment for both the player and the franchise.

This reunion is particularly noteworthy as Smith originally joined the Jets in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Over the years, he has often reflected on that draft position as a personal snub. However, the Jets are now banking on the experience of a veteran quarterback who is coming off a challenging season, where he struggled significantly with the Las Vegas Raiders. Smith's tenure with the Raiders saw him finish with a league-high 17 interceptions and rank 30th out of 33 qualified passers in expected points added (EPA) per dropback.

Smith's first game back will be against the Tennessee Titans on September 13, where he will become the eighth player to start a season opener for the Jets in the past 11 years. His last opening start for the Jets was in 2014, making it a remarkable 12-year gap, the longest for any quarterback in the Super Bowl era between opening starts for a single franchise, according to ESPN Research.

Currently, Smith is just 332 passing yards away from surpassing Zach Wilson to become the 10th all-time leading passer for the Jets. This statistic underscores the instability the team has faced at the quarterback position over the years. In their decision-making process, the Jets considered other options, including Tua Tagovailoa, but ultimately opted for Smith as a more economical choice while looking ahead to a promising 2027 draft.

The Jets' confidence in Smith is not solely based on his on-field performance; it also stems from his leadership qualities. Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell has labeled him as "the alpha in the room," while former teammate Brandon Marshall emphasized Smith's resilience, stating, "You can't push Geno over. That is needed in the locker room, especially today." This toughness was put to the test in 2015 when Smith suffered a broken jaw from an altercation with teammate IK Enemkpali over a financial dispute.

Since leaving the Jets, Smith's career has taken him through various backup roles with teams like the New York Giants, Los Angeles Chargers, and Seattle Seahawks, where he eventually succeeded Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback in 2022. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll praised Smith's work ethic, noting that he prepared every day as if he would be starting the next game.

As Smith steps back into the spotlight, the Jets have also made moves to bolster their offensive line by acquiring former Raiders linemen Dylan Parham and Jordan Meredith. Despite the potential improvements, statistics from NFL Next Gen Stats indicate that only five of Smith's 17 interceptions were directly caused by pressure, suggesting that addressing the offensive line alone may not resolve his past issues with decision-making. Frank Reich, the Jets' new offensive coordinator, faces the challenge of unlocking Smith's potential while navigating these complexities.

Demario Davis, a veteran linebacker returning to the Jets, has observed a transformation in Smith, stating, "You have to go through a certain amount of life to get that. You can’t just buy it." Smith remains focused on the future, asserting, "It means that I’ve been in this league a while. And I intend to stay here." With this comeback, Smith aims to prove his critics wrong and help the Jets find stability at the quarterback position.
