Germany and Liverpool playmaker Florian Wirtz said he had never spoken to Jürgen Klopp before his new national team coach called him this week.
Wirtz is certain to be in Klopp's first Germany squad for the Nations League due to be announced on September 17, despite flattering to deceive at the World Cup as the Germans crashed out for a third straight edition, costing Julian Nagelsmann his job.
Wirtz moved to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, a year after Klopp left the club after a trophy-laden nine-year spell. Now they have finally talked.
"We actually chatted on the phone two days ago for the first time. I never previously had any contact with him," Wirtz, 23, told RTL and Sky Sport.
"People here at Liverpool have told me about him so it was cool that I could get to know him, speak with him and I really enjoyed it for sure."
Klopp's first Germany game in charge is against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24.
