Quarterback Joe Milton has made his return to the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad as of Wednesday, following a competitive battle for the backup quarterback position that ultimately went to Sam Howell. Milton's reassignment comes after he was waived on Monday, just a day before Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that Howell would serve as the primary backup to starting quarterback Dak Prescott.
Schottenheimer elaborated on the decision, stating, "We looked at the whole body of work. We just felt like Sam had done a little bit more just in terms of executing the offense in certain areas." This assessment highlights the coaching staff's focus on overall performance and command of the offense during the preseason.
Milton, who previously backed up Prescott during the 2025 season, showcased notable improvement this preseason compared to his performance from the previous year. The 26-year-old quarterback threw for 378 yards, achieving three touchdowns without any interceptions, demonstrating his potential as a reliable backup.
On the other hand, Howell's standout performance in the preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints may have solidified his position. He orchestrated a comeback by throwing two fourth-quarter touchdowns and executing a crucial 2-point conversion to tie the game, although the Saints ultimately secured a 27-24 victory with a field goal.
Howell, 25, brings more regular-season experience to the Cowboys, having started all 17 games for the Washington Commanders in the 2023 season, with a total of 18 starts under his belt. Despite his experience, Howell holds a record of 5-13, indicating room for growth in his performance.
In contrast, Milton has yet to make a regular-season start in his first two years in the NFL, although he did see action in four games last season as a relief for Prescott. Milton was initially selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots before being traded to the Cowboys.
Howell's recent signing with the Cowboys included a one-year contract worth $2.5 million, with $2 million guaranteed, reflecting the team's investment in his potential as a backup quarterback. As the season approaches, both quarterbacks will be looking to prove their value to the Cowboys, with Milton now focusing on honing his skills on the practice squad.
