The Miami Dolphins undertook significant roster adjustments over the weekend, trimming their squad from 91 players to the required 53 by the NFL's deadline on Sunday. Among the notable cuts was linebacker Tyrel Dodson, who had been a key player for the Dolphins, starting 16 games in the 2025 season. His expected partnership with All-Pro linebacker Jordyn Brooks for the upcoming season has now been disrupted.
In a media session on Tuesday, Brooks shared his feelings regarding Dodson's unexpected release. "Yeah, I was [surprised]," Brooks stated. He elaborated on their close relationship, saying, "Somebody that’s, off the field, one of my best friends. Somebody that I’ve got to know very well over the last three years. So just seeing him go, that’s always difficult, and then you understand like the business side of things. It’s hard not to take some things personal in this business, but I’m excited that he already found a new home."
Brooks conveyed his support for Dodson, noting, "I spoke to him, he’s in great spirits. The type of person that he is, he’s just going to keep going. So I’m not worried about his mental or spiritual right now. I know he’s going to be all right, but it does suck not having him as a teammate anymore." Dodson had a standout season last year, recording a career-high 129 tackles along with six quarterback hits, five sacks, three passes defensed, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
With Dodson's departure, Brooks will now be teaming up with rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, a second-round draft pick. Brooks has expressed enthusiasm about Rodriguez's performance during training camp and the preseason. He described Rodriguez as a "rookie vet," highlighting his maturity and understanding of the game. "Whatever he was doing at Texas Tech, he was doing the right things. Came in very knowledgeable of the game, very mature and just ready to go. He’s just gotten better and better since OTAs, honestly. I’m excited to see his growth and what he does this year," Brooks added.
As the Dolphins prepare for the 2026 season, the focus will shift to developing their new linebacker duo. While the team may not be in contention for the division title this year, the growth of Brooks and Rodriguez offers a silver lining for fans looking ahead. The Dolphins are hoping that this new combination will solidify their defense and contribute significantly to their overall performance in the upcoming season.
