Kazi Md. Salahuddin has successfully secured re-election as the president of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), a position he will continue to hold after being elected unopposed during the federation's Ordinary Congress held in Thimphu, Bhutan, on Saturday. This marks another term for Salahuddin, who has been at the helm of SAFF through multiple leadership periods.
The Congress saw participation from representatives of all SAFF member associations, as well as delegates from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The event was overseen by Shifan Maharoof, the chairman of the SAFF Electoral Committee, who conducted the election in accordance with the federation's statutes and regulations.
In addition to Salahuddin's re-election, the Congress also saw the unopposed election of Sri Lanka Football Federation president Jaswar Umaru Lebbe as vice president of SAFF. Furthermore, Ms. Zimbiri from the Bhutan Football Federation was elected as the female executive committee member, highlighting the federation's commitment to inclusivity. Hussain Shafiu, the vice president of the Football Association of Maldives, was also elected to the SAFF Executive Committee.
Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran will continue to represent SAFF in the AFC for the remainder of the current term, ensuring continuity in leadership at both regional and continental levels.
Upon his re-election, Salahuddin expressed gratitude to the member associations for their trust and confidence in his leadership. He emphasized his commitment to advancing football across South Asia, with plans to introduce new competitions and expand development programs. "I am deeply honoured to have been elected to serve South Asian football for the next term," he stated, reflecting on the responsibilities that come with the role.
Salahuddin outlined his vision for the future, focusing on strengthening governance within SAFF, enhancing competitive opportunities, and investing in youth and women’s football. He acknowledged the importance of raising technical standards and creating greater opportunities for players, coaches, referees, and administrators throughout the region. "The years ahead present significant opportunities for South Asian football," he remarked, calling for collective efforts to improve the sport.
During the Congress, delegates also approved several important agenda items, including the minutes from the previous Congress, the General Secretary’s annual report, and the financial statements for the 2025 fiscal year. The 2026 budget was also ratified, along with the appointment of independent external auditors, ensuring transparency and accountability in the federation's operations.
The Congress concluded with a reaffirmation from member associations of their commitment to working together to promote the growth and long-term development of football across South Asia, setting a collaborative tone for the upcoming term.
