Manchester United's head coach Michael Carrick has indicated that Patrick Dorgu might be the answer to the club's left-back dilemma this season. The Red Devils have identified the left-back position as a priority for reinforcement during the summer transfer window, but efforts to secure new talent have not yet come to fruition.
Throughout the summer, Manchester United reportedly had several targets in mind, including Barcelona's Alejandro Balde. Additionally, the club made a late attempt to acquire Rayan Ait-Nouri from Manchester City. However, neither of these transfers materialized, leaving Luke Shaw as the only experienced left-back option available to Carrick.
As the transfer deadline approached, there were discussions about Harry Amass potentially going out on loan, but the club ultimately opted to keep him in the squad. When asked about the possibility of Dorgu stepping into the left-back role, Carrick expressed openness to the idea, highlighting the player's versatility.
Dorgu joined Manchester United from the Italian side Lecce in 2025, where he primarily played as a left-back. Carrick acknowledged the young player's potential, stating, "He can certainly play there. He has done, without doubt. I'm not sitting here saying he can't do that. It’s just the way we’ve been since I’ve been here."
Despite Dorgu's limited appearances last season due to injury, Carrick views him as an asset, almost like a new signing for the current campaign. "He actually has been injured, unfortunately, for some time. You could almost argue that he played three or four times for us last season, so for me, he’s almost like a new player, you know, to have, and it’s almost like a new signing in some ways because he’s added so much to the group," Carrick explained.
In addition to his defensive capabilities, Dorgu has showcased his attacking prowess, having played on the right side for Denmark and scoring a notable goal during the summer. Carrick emphasized Dorgu's adaptability, saying, "He can play left-back. He’s that type where he can do a number of things. I’m certainly not saying he can’t do that at all." The manager also mentioned that Dorgu has been practicing in training for the left-back position, indicating that they might explore this option if necessary.
Despite the ongoing challenges in securing a left-back, Manchester United has been active in other areas, particularly in strengthening their midfield. The club invested around £140 million ($189.2 million) to revamp their midfield options, bringing in players such as Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba, and Andrey Santos.
Looking ahead, club officials are reportedly planning to prioritize defensive reinforcements in the upcoming summer transfer window, with Newcastle United's Lewis Hall emerging as a potential target. As the season progresses, the situation at left-back will be closely monitored, with Carrick keen to maximize the talents of Dorgu and other squad members.
