Michael Chiesa Discusses His Mindset Ahead of Final UFC Fight

Michael Chiesa recently opened up about his mental approach as he prepared for his final fight in the UFC, which took place at UFC Seattle. The veteran fighter emphasized that he did not view the match as his last but rather as just another opportunity to compete, a mindset that ultimately proved beneficial for him.

At 38 years old, Chiesa concluded his professional fighting career with a decisive first-round submission victory over Niko Price. Although he had announced his intention to retire following this bout, he made a conscious effort to ensure that this decision did not interfere with his fight strategy.

Chiesa, who gained fame as a winner on The Ultimate Fighter, credited his uncle, a sports psychologist, for helping him maintain focus leading up to the fight. He noted that his uncle encouraged him to concentrate on the task at hand rather than the weight of the occasion. "My uncle Joe’s a sports psychologist, so that’s something that he really wanted me to focus on heading into this fight, just so I didn’t let anything slip through the cracks," Chiesa explained. "Just focus on it being the next fight and then we can focus on it being the last one after I get my hand raised. So that was just kind of my mindset going into it, and it was an amazing experience."

By adopting this perspective, Chiesa was able to remain in the moment and avoid the distractions that could have arisen from the significance of his final appearance in the octagon. He stated, "I really wasn’t focused on this being the last time I get to do this. Very much just focused on being in the moment. I had to be locked in, there was no margin for error inside the octagon." Chiesa believed that placing too much emphasis on the finality of the fight could have detracted from his competitive edge.

Chiesa's mentality going into UFC Seattle was crucial, especially considering his extensive career, which has seen him face a myriad of top-level opponents while competing in both the lightweight and welterweight divisions. Throughout his time in the UFC, he has consistently aimed for title contention, and although he did not achieve that ultimate goal, he enjoyed a lengthy and successful career at a high level.

Reflecting on his approach, Chiesa remarked, "Me focusing on [the fight] being the next fight just made me locked into staying focused on the game plan. Staying focused on the task at hand and just kind of going about it the same way I have all of my fights." His dedication to maintaining a competitive mindset has been a hallmark of his career, as he has always sought to climb the ranks and position himself for a title shot.

As he steps away from the sport, Chiesa leaves behind a legacy of resilience and determination, having made significant contributions to the UFC during his tenure. His final fight not only showcased his skills but also highlighted the importance of mental preparation in achieving success in high-pressure situations.
