New Jersey Devils Should Secure Luke Evangelista's Extension Before Deadline

The New Jersey Devils are in a crucial position regarding the future of forward Luke Evangelista, who is currently under contract for one more season. The organization invested a first-round pick in Evangelista, and it would be unwise to let him enter restricted free agency without securing an extension. As the September 15 deadline approaches, the urgency for the Devils to act is palpable.

Recent developments, including the offer sheet for Leo Carlsson, have highlighted the risks of allowing a talented player like Evangelista to explore free agency. The 24-year-old has the option to sign an extension now, but after September 15, the maximum contract length he can sign with his current team will decrease from eight years to seven years due to changes in the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that takes effect on the 16th. This shift could significantly impact the cap hit of his next deal, making it imperative for the Devils to finalize negotiations soon.

Evangelista's current contract carries a $3 million cap hit, which will remain unchanged until the end of the 2026-27 season. Any new contract would not take effect until the 2027-28 season, a year when the Devils are projected to have more cap space available. The salary cap for the upcoming season is set at $104 million, with the Devils currently sitting at approximately $102.15 million against the cap, leaving them with about $1.85 million in available space following a recent trade.

Looking ahead, the salary cap is projected to rise to $113.5 million next summer. The Devils have roughly $81.2 million already committed to contracts, which means they could have over $32 million in cap space available. However, this figure does not account for the upcoming contracts of key players like Nico Hischier and Evangelista himself. Hischier's next deal will undoubtedly take a significant portion of that cap space, making it even more critical for the Devils to secure Evangelista's extension now.

According to AFP Analytics, the long-term projection for Evangelista is a six-year deal worth approximately $7.90 million annually, totaling $47.4 million. Alternatively, a short-term deal could be structured at around $5.76 million for one year. The decision lies in whether to invest in a longer-term contract or to allow Evangelista to play out his final year before renegotiating as a 26-year-old. The potential for an eight-year deal remains enticing, as it would provide the Devils with cost certainty and flexibility moving forward.

Signing Evangelista to an eight-year contract would allow the Devils to lock in a mid-tier play-driving winger at a reasonable rate, especially as the salary cap continues to rise. The longer contract would likely lead to a lower average annual value (AAV) than a shorter deal, making it a strategic move for the franchise. Comparisons can be drawn to recent contracts signed by other young players, which have similarly aimed to secure talent through their prime years while accommodating the rising cap.

As training camp approaches, the urgency for the Devils to finalize Evangelista's extension cannot be overstated. With a core group of players that he complements well, retaining him long-term at a favorable cap hit seems like a prudent decision. The risk of allowing him to enter free agency or face offer sheets from other teams could lead to a situation the Devils would prefer to avoid. Thus, securing Evangelista's future with the franchise before the September 15 deadline is essential for the Devils' long-term strategy.
