New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft runs a franchise valued at $9 billion. Yet, contract negotiations inside Foxborough continue triggering frustration across NFL circles.

Tensions surfaced after an anonymous league agent criticized team spending habits during player contract discussions. Star cornerbackChristian Gonzalez now awaits his long-term payday, leaving fans wondering whether leadership will finally pay top dollar to retain elite talent.

Patriots Face Fresh Criticism Over Spending

According to Patriots insider Carlos A. Lopez, an NFL agent who has worked on Patriots contracts shared a blunt view of the team.

“The Pats are notoriously a pain in the ass,” theagent said. “They’re honestly good people. Just a pain in the a- to squeeze because they’re so fucking cheap for no reason.”

The Patriots ranked 31st in cash-over-cap spending during the past 10 years. Only the Pittsburgh Steelers spent less. The spending number has become part of the debate around Gonzalez.

“I know there’s a perception that we have held back on spending,” Kraft told reporters in Las Vegas in 2024. “Let me just say, for our fans, that’s just not true. Look, we were blessed to have a coach in our system who was a great coach and also understood value. He ran a tight ship.”

Gonzalez has become the latest test of the Patriots’ spending plan. Seattle cornerback Devon Witherspoon recently signed a four-year deal worth $132 million, raising pressure on New England to finish a deal with Gonzalez.

Christian Gonzalez Waits for a Major Extension

Patriots owner Robert Kraft has already confirmed a record-setting offer that would make Christian Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

“We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person. That’s why we’ve made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and coincidentally, it’s the highest contract in Patriots franchise history.” Kraft told reporters. “So we’re glad we drafted him and he developed here, and we hope he’ll be with us for a long time.”

The team already locked up Gonzalez’s fifth-year option earlier this year, giving the front office extra leverage as talks continue.

The two sides have not reached a final agreement. The Patriots remain willing to make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in football. The question is whether the team will match that promise with a contract before the season begins.

Gonzalez’s deal could change how fans view the Patriots. Paying Gonzalez could help quiet the criticism surrounding Kraft’s spending record.
