NFL Players Transforming the Fashion Industry

In recent years, NFL players have increasingly captured attention not just for their athletic prowess but also for their fashion choices, which have become a significant aspect of their public personas. This evolution has allowed both the league and its athletes to utilize fashion as a powerful branding tool.

The growing fascination with players' game-day attire has fostered a unique relationship between sports and fashion, creating new opportunities for athletes. Kyle Smith, the NFL's fashion editor, plays a pivotal role in this transformation, guiding players in their style choices while educating them about potential avenues within the fashion industry.

“As I get to talk to our athletes, what I find is maybe they might not know about all the opportunities that exist for them,” Smith noted, highlighting the potential for players to launch their own clothing lines or participate in high-profile fashion events. Notably, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson showcased their fashion sense by walking the runway at Paris Fashion Week in 2024.

Social media has significantly amplified the visibility of these fashion choices, allowing players to connect with younger audiences. The NFL's “Behind the Fit” video series, which explores the stories behind players' outfits, exemplifies how the league is leveraging digital platforms to engage fans. Smith emphasized that even simple fashion statements, like a band T-shirt, can attract new fans and enhance the league's global appeal.

“Then you’re following (that athlete) from team to team or their whole career, and you’re buying their jersey,” Smith explained, underscoring the importance of reaching new demographics as the NFL expands internationally.

Fashion not only opens doors for athletes but also serves as a medium for storytelling. Smith remarked, “There’s so many ways that our players are talked about, as the top wide receiver or top quarterback. But I know our athletes have such rich backgrounds and interests and things beyond the field.”

Brands are increasingly recognizing the marketing potential of NFL players, viewing them as valuable assets to promote products and engage diverse audiences. The NFL has established partnerships with high-profile brands such as Swiss luxury watchmaker Breitling and American retailer Abercrombie & Fitch. Additionally, players showcased their style at the GQ Bowl in February, where designer Thom Browne presented his fall 2026 collection ahead of the Super Bowl.

“Now brands are loving sending things over to players, contacting me or the players’ agents and representatives to make sure that the new collections are in their hands, because they can see that it adds a lot of value to the brand,” Smith stated, emphasizing the impact of players' celebrity status on marketing efforts.

Moreover, the authenticity that players bring to fashion is reshaping the industry. Athletes are increasingly willing to experiment with styles that challenge traditional gender norms, as seen when wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster donned a knee-length skirt at the 2023 Super Bowl. “If there’s something that they think is cool, they’ll wear it. They don’t really think about what is traditionally seen as men’s wear,” Smith remarked, noting that younger fans often look to these players as style icons.

As the fashion industry continues to evolve, it appears to be increasingly influenced by NFL athletes, who are not only embracing their unique styles but also shaping the future of men's fashion.
