No. 12 Waxahachie posts crazy numbers in lopsided win vs rival Ennis: A breakdown

Waxahachie (TX) had everyone's attention entering the season. The Indians were the top Texas team in USA TODAY Sports' Super 25, with a No. 12 national ranking prior to their first game. They were ranked atop 6A by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, and No. 2 in 6A by Dallas Morning News.

After a 72-14 beatdown of rival Ennis (TX), Waxahachie backed up the assertion that it is the best team in Texas.

With every 72-point game comes some wild stat lines. See the key numbers in how Waxahachie retained hold of the US 287 highway sign in the Battle of 287, winning the 105th meeting of a game that hearkens back to 1908.

By scoring 72 points, the Indians broke the scoring record in games between these rivals. Though the first 104 matchups, the record had been 61, set by Ennis in 2013, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Waxahachie needed only 11 offensive snaps to score four touchdowns in the first quarter, putting pressure on the Lions with a 29-0 lead before the second quarter even began.

Wide receiver Jashawn Crayton had an incredible start to his sophomore season, catching seven passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns, including TD receptions of 44 yards and 50 yards, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Crayton is listed at 5-foot-11.5 and 185 pounds, and earned a three-star rating from 247Sports upon the outlet's release of its 2029 rankings. He currently has eight offers, according to the outlet, including from Texas A&M and University of Arizona.

With a performance like Crayton's, a team needs a quarterback who can throw. Enter Jerry Meyer III, a three-star South Carolina commit beginning his third year at the helm of Waxahachie.

The 6-foot, 190-pound senior QB passed for 313 yards and five touchdowns, going 16-for-24, per the Dallas Morning News.

It's a strong start to his season after leading the Indians to the quarterfinals last year. He has improved each year so far, transferring from Lake Mead Christian Academy (Henderson, NV) after a successful freshman year to Waxahachie, where he passed for 3,308 yards and 29 touchdowns against stiffer Texas competition as a sophomore. As a junior, he improved his accuracy, raising his completion rate from 58% to 63.3% and helping the team go 11-2.

Waxahachie had ground contributions as well. Junior running back Taylen Strange, who rushed for 1,148 yards last year, had a nice opening night with 111 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the first half of play, helpng the Indians take a 37-7 lead into halftime.

Strange does not have any star ranking on 247Sports, but entering his junior year, he has seven offers from schools including SMU, Louisiana Tech and UTSA.

The team's RB1 as a sophomore, Strange led Waxahachie in all-purpose yards (1,318) and rushing touchdowns (nine) last fall. He'll be an important piece of the offense again this year.
