In a significant move within Major League Soccer, Real Salt Lake has announced the acquisition of forward Jason Shokalook from Chicago Fire FC. The transfer, which was confirmed on Wednesday, will see Shokalook join RSL through December 2026, with options extending to 2028.
As part of the agreement, Chicago Fire will receive up to $200,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM). This includes $150,000 in guaranteed GAM, allocated as $50,000 for the 2026 season and $100,000 for 2027, along with an additional $50,000 in conditional GAM. Furthermore, the Fire will retain a sell-on percentage for any future transfer involving Shokalook.
Kurt Schmid, the chief soccer officer for Real Salt Lake, expressed optimism about the signing, stating, "Jason’s talent was clear during his time in Chicago. RSL gives him the opportunity to highlight his natural finishing ability while taking the next step in his overall development." This sentiment reflects the club's commitment to nurturing young talent, an approach that has historically benefited players transitioning into the professional ranks.
Shokalook, a 23-year-old American forward, has made a notable impact during his time with Chicago Fire, contributing 2 goals and 2 assists in 12 appearances. He joined the Fire last December after a standout season in MLS NEXT Pro, where he won the Golden Boot award by scoring 20 goals and providing 4 assists in just 22 matches. His performance earned him a spot on the year-end Best XI and a nomination for the league's MVP award.
Upon joining Real Salt Lake, Shokalook expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, highlighting the club's reputation for developing young players. He stated, "As a younger guy, coming to a club with a reputation for giving young players the opportunity to play, that’s exciting to me to come here, work hard and be ready." Shokalook also conveyed his eagerness to work with head coach Pablo Mastroeni, noting Mastroeni's impressive track record of leading teams to the playoffs and his understanding of the players' daily challenges.
Currently, Real Salt Lake sits in 10th place in the Western Conference with 28 points, just one point behind Minnesota United FC for the final Wild Card position. In contrast, Chicago Fire is performing well in the Eastern Conference, holding third place with 37 points.
