In an exciting start to the volleyball season, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology secured a 3-1 victory against Spalding University, with set scores of 25-15, 22-25, 25-16, and 25-14. This win marks a promising beginning for the Engineers as they embark on their 2026 campaign.
The match showcased the defensive prowess of Rose-Hulman, led by Kennedy Otwell, who recorded an impressive 15 digs. Offensively, the Engineers displayed a balanced attack with three players achieving double-digit kills. Keira Ohse was the standout performer, contributing 16 kills to the team's success. Emma Blanton also had a noteworthy performance, achieving a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs, while Greta Carlson added 10 kills to the tally.
With this victory, Rose-Hulman improves to 1-0 for the season, setting a positive tone as they prepare for their next challenge. The Engineers will compete in the Rosalie Resch Invitational hosted by the University of Chicago this weekend. They are set to face off against the University of Chicago on Friday, followed by matches against Concordia University Wisconsin and Edgewood College on Saturday.
In addition to the volleyball action, the Rose-Hulman men's soccer team also had a successful outing, defeating Greenville University 4-0 in their season opener. The match took place at Rose-Hulman's home field, where the Engineers demonstrated their dominance from the outset.
The scoring began just 10 minutes into the match when sophomore Pace Morel skillfully maneuvered past his defender on the right flank. He delivered a precise pass to junior Ryan Shapiro, who easily tapped in the opening goal for Rose-Hulman. The Engineers doubled their lead in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick. Senior Oliver Fila's lob found graduate student Wil Bell, who headed the ball into the net, making it 2-0.
Shapiro continued to shine, netting his second goal in the 63rd minute after a series of dribbles that left the Greenville goalkeeper sliding helplessly. The scoring was capped off by an own goal from Greenville in the 67th minute, further solidifying Rose-Hulman's commanding performance.
Looking ahead, the men's soccer team is scheduled to play at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, on Friday at 7:45 p.m. Both teams from Rose-Hulman are off to strong starts this season, signaling a competitive year ahead for the Engineers.
