The Eldorado Eagles are gearing up for an exciting cross country season, led by the formidable Rahmer sisters. Gianna Rahmer, a standout runner, has established herself as a dominant force in New Mexico’s Class 5A division. Over her three years in varsity cross country, she has never finished outside of first place in any race within the state, creating a reputation as an unbeatable competitor.
As the new season approaches, the anticipation builds with the arrival of her younger sister, Isla Rahmer. At just 13 years old, Isla is stepping up to the varsity level after an impressive career at the club level, where she has accumulated numerous national victories. Coaches from rival teams believe she could pose a significant challenge to Gianna’s reign.
Gianna, a three-time defending state champion, acknowledges the potential for both sisters to shine. “It might not be 1-2 every race … New Mexico’s talent is getting a lot higher, but we will definitely be 1-2 in a lot of races,” she remarked, highlighting the growing competitiveness of the sport within the state.
The sisters will make their debut together on August 29 at Cleveland’s season-opening meet, a venue where Gianna first made her mark by winning as an eighth-grader. Isla expressed her excitement about teaming up with Gianna, stating, “I’ve been looking forward to it since the sixth grade, watching Gianna run. I’m gonna unlock things I didn’t know I could really do.”
As the season unfolds, the Eagles’ roster is not solely reliant on the Rahmer sisters. Eldorado boasts a strong team with depth that could make them a formidable contender in the upcoming races. However, the primary focus will be on how closely the two sisters can match each other’s pace throughout the season.
Isla shared her feelings about transitioning to varsity competition, admitting, “I’m a little scared coming in as an eighth-grader. But I have the capability of doing well against those people. I think having Gianna as a mentor has definitely made this transition running at Eldorado so much easier.” Gianna’s experience and success will undoubtedly serve as a guiding light for Isla as she navigates her new environment.
Gianna, now a junior, is eager for the season ahead. After struggling with health issues during the spring track season, she feels rejuvenated and ready to prove herself. “I think this is going to be a big season for me. I expect big things for myself and my team,” she stated confidently.
When asked about their competitive nature, both sisters acknowledged their shared drive to succeed. Gianna noted, “We’re both pretty competitive,” while Isla emphasized that their focus will be on supporting each other and striving for team success rather than competing against one another. This supportive dynamic could enhance their performance as they push each other to excel.
As the season kicks off, the excitement is palpable for both sisters. With Isla’s recent growth spurt making her taller than Gianna, the sisterly rivalry may take on a new dimension. Gianna remarked, “I think she will mentally push me more than physically push me. I feel very confident in my abilities and I feel very confident in her abilities.”
The Rahmer sisters are set to make their mark in the Eldorado cross country team, with their first race on August 29 in Rio Rancho. With both runners eager to showcase their talents, fans and competitors alike are in for a thrilling season.
