Sri Lanka triumphed over Pakistan in the second semi-final of the Women’s Asia Cup, winning by four wickets on Thursday at the Dubai International Stadium. Chasing a target of 131, Sri Lanka successfully reached their goal with eight balls to spare, earning their place in the final against India.
Pakistan initially seemed to hold the upper hand after setting a score of 130 for five in their 20 overs. However, Sri Lanka demonstrated resilience, overcoming early setbacks that saw them lose three wickets during the powerplay and two more before the conclusion of their innings.
The turning point for Sri Lanka came from the partnership between Kavisha Dilhari and Harshitha Samarawickrama, who steadied the innings amidst the early chaos. Their collaboration was pivotal, as they added 67 runs for the fifth wicket, allowing Sri Lanka to regain their footing. Samarawickrama contributed 36 runs off 31 balls, while Dilhari scored 33 runs from 33 deliveries, both players striking crucial boundaries.
In the final overs, Nilakshika Silva and Kaushini Nuthyangana provided the necessary firepower to secure the victory. Silva finished the match unbeaten on 18 runs from just ten balls, hitting three fours, while Nuthyangana added an unbeaten ten runs from four balls, including a six, to wrap up the chase decisively.
Despite the loss, Pakistan's captain Fatima Sana delivered an outstanding performance, earning the Player of the Match award. She scored an impressive 47 runs off 36 balls and took four wickets, showcasing her all-round capabilities. Sana’s innings included four fours and two sixes, helping Pakistan recover from a precarious position at 52 for four. Tuba Hassan also contributed with an unbeaten 12 runs, allowing Pakistan to finish their innings at 130 for five.
Pakistan's batting struggled to gain momentum early on, with Muneeba Ali dismissed for just two runs and Shawaal Zulfiqar managing only 24. Gull Feroza's 21 runs were not enough to set a more commanding total, as Sri Lanka's bowlers, led by Chamari Athapaththu and Chamudi Praboda, each taking two wickets, kept the pressure on the batting side.
Sri Lanka's chase began on a shaky note, losing captain Athapaththu for five runs and Sanjana Kavindi for a first-ball duck. The team found themselves in a precarious position at 33 for four, but the partnership between Samarawickrama and Dilhari was crucial in stabilizing the innings. Although both batters fell within six deliveries of each other, leaving Sri Lanka at 109 for six, the late contributions from Silva and Nuthyangana ensured a successful finish.
With this victory, Sri Lanka not only advances to the final of the Women’s Asia Cup but also sets up an exciting matchup against India, promising a thrilling conclusion to the tournament.
