In a thrilling night of high school football on September 4, the St. Mary Catholic Central (SMCC) Falcons and the Summerfield Bulldogs both emerged victorious, showcasing their talents in the Monroe County Region. Despite facing challenges, including the loss of their home field, the Falcons demonstrated resilience and skill on the road.
Coach Adam Kipf's SMCC squad, which has been displaced from its traditional home at Navarre Field, secured a hard-fought 29-19 win against Flat Rock at Riverview Gabriel Richard. Originally scheduled to host Flat Rock at Gibraltar Carlson, the game was relocated due to flooding at Carlson, adding another layer of adversity for the Falcons. However, this did not deter the team, as they improved to a perfect 2-0 on the season.
Flat Rock started strong, quickly establishing a 13-0 lead with touchdowns from Joel Scully and David Riddle. Scully's 1-yard touchdown run and Riddle's 22-yard reception from quarterback Jordan Godfrey set the tone early. However, SMCC responded with a determined effort, culminating in a touchdown run by Brady Reinhardt just before halftime, giving them a 14-13 advantage at the break.
Flat Rock regained the lead in the third quarter with another score from Scully, but the Falcons were not to be denied. Cole Reinhardt, Brady's older brother, sealed the victory with a decisive 58-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. The loss dropped Flat Rock to 0-2, highlighting their struggles in the early part of the season.
In another matchup, the Monroe Trojans faced off against Dexter, but despite a promising start, they fell 21-7. Monroe took an early lead with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Dalen Cosby to Tavin Parkhurst. However, the Trojans were unable to capitalize on their offensive opportunities, finishing the game with 306 total yards but failing to score after the first quarter. Coach Kyle Reed noted that while they dominated possession, turnovers and penalties hindered their chances to extend their lead.
Meanwhile, the Summerfield Bulldogs continued their impressive start to the season with a commanding 40-0 victory over Detroit Northwestern. This win marked their second consecutive shutout, demonstrating their defensive prowess and offensive efficiency. Hudson Crots was a standout performer, scoring three touchdowns, including a 71-yard kickoff return. Quarterback Logan Schwichtenburg also contributed significantly, throwing touchdown passes and adding a rushing score.
In another notable game, Pewamo-Westphalia showcased its championship potential with a dominant 35-0 win against Whiteford. The Pirates established a commanding lead by halftime and triggered the running-clock mercy rule in the third quarter, limiting Whiteford to just 71 yards of total offense. Elijah Vance was the lone bright spot for the Bobcats, rushing for 49 yards.
The results from these games highlight the competitive nature of high school football in the Monroe County Region as teams continue to vie for dominance early in the season. With several teams showing promise, fans can expect an exciting season ahead.
