Two-time WNBA champion and veteran star DeWanna Bonner has left the Phoenix Mercury after a buyout. She has since signed with the Atlanta Dream, and fans feel some type of way about it.
DeWanna Bonner’s situation has been one to keep an eye on for a while. The 39-year-old star has been with the Mercury again since 2025, but Phoenix has been one of the WNBA’s worst teams in 2026.
As such, Bonner’s goal of contending for a championship with the team did not come to pass. And this has led to speculation she might get bought out.
That’s exactly what happened on Wednesday, with Bonner subsequently signing with the Atlanta Dream. And this move has caused quite some buzz in the world of women’s basketball.

Adding Bonner with her championship experience, and ability to still produce at a decently high level, sounds like a good move on paper. However, fans don’t seem too confident.
“Big move, but the championship path still needs proving,” one fan commented. “Weird move and won’t make a difference but glad she got her way, I guess,” wrote another.
“Dream knew they had no shot with the current roster,” a third fan said. “And when she ain’t getting playing time she’ll want out of Atlanta,” another fan observed.
“They might get a version of DB they’re not ready for, I don’t see this move working,” a fifth fan wrote. “OMG< this team is going nowhere quick,” said a sixth fan.
While the move doesn’t seem too popular, every little bit can matter in the postseason. Bonner is averaging 10.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in 2026, and her contribution should make some difference for Atlanta.
